Fluorine and many fluorine compounds are very toxic to humans and other living organisms. The lethal dose (LD50, one hour) is 150 to 185 ppm for elemental fluorine. Elemental fluorine has a strong burning and corrosive effect on the lungs, skin and especially on the eyes. Even five minutes of contact with 25 ppm of fluorine will cause considerable irritation of the eyes. At the same time, equally toxic hydrogen fluoride is created when fluorine reacts with water (humidity, skin surface).
Permanent monitoring of all areas in which fluorine is used is therefore imperative. Sensors and a detection system are essential for the operation of a well-functioning fluorination plant.
Regular inspection of the monitoring systems by specialized companies every six months ensures that the requirements of the trade associations are met.
